For example, if you supply the best car in the world with low-quality fuel, it will not reach full power, and of course, shorten the life of its components, right? Our body works the same way. One of the best fuels we can offer our body is alkaline water.
That is why it is of the utmost importance that we know everything we put in our bodies. Origin of the food we eat, nutritional values of the food we eat and understand terms that may seem complicated, such as pH (hydrogen potential). Today, you will know all about the hydrogen potential and how it is critical in your life.
We grew up learning that water needs to have three characteristics, be tasteless, odorless, and colorless, but did you know that this information is incomplete? Ideal water needs to have several other aspects of being perfect, and one of them is directly linked to pH. But after all, what is this?
Hydrogen potential or (ph) is responsible for telling us if that substance is acidic, neutral, or alkaline. Knowing this is critical to understanding the body's needs and how best to meet them.
pH is measured using a table from 0 to 14. Since substances with pH seven are considered neutral (neither acidic nor alkaline), anything below number 7 is deemed to be acidic, as is everything above number 7 is considered to be alkaline.
ACID, NEUTRAL AND ALKALINE
The pH table is a logarithmic progression table; for example, it grows by multiplying the previous number by 10.
Let's explain further with the table below.
pH 7 - Neutral
pH 6 -10 times more acid than neutral
pH 5 - 100 times more acid than neutral
pH 4 - 1,000 times more acid than neutral
pH 3 - 10,000 times more acid than neutral
pH 2 - 100,000 times more acid than neutral
pH 1 - 1,000,000 times more acidic than neutral
That's true a glass of soda can be up to 100,000 times more acidic than a glass of neutral water. Interesting, isn't it?
Alkaline substances are roughly the opposite of acidic substances. Its scale, too, is logarithmic, meaning each level above is ten times more alkaline than the previous one.
When we are born, we are primarily alkaline, and as we get older, we become increasingly acidic. This transition is one of the prime factors for us to become more prone to advanced diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, gastric problems, and even cancer as we get older. For this reason, more and more doctors are recommending alkaline diets.
Our blood works with pH at 7.35, slightly alkaline. Our body does everything to keep it that way. So when we eat or drink something acidic, like a soda, our body needs to balance its circulatory system, so it needs extra minerals, and where do we have minerals in abundance? In our bones. Our body removes minerals from bones so that it can balance the bloodstream so that it goes back to 7.35. And that is just one of the problems of an acidifying diet.
The consumption of alkaline and alkalizing foods, on the other hand, benefits our body by facilitating various functions necessary for our health and well being.
However, when we talk about alkaline diets, many questions may arise. One of the most raised questions about this is that our stomach is a place that needs to be acidic for digestion, can't an alkaline diet end up leaving the stomach too alkaline and hampering our digestion?
This is not the case because when we eat alkaline foods, the stomach, through the acid-forming pump, releases more acid inside and keeps its pH below 4, which is ideal for digestion and acts as a barrier against opportunistic infections. Therefore, alkaline nutrition does not leave the inside of the stomach alkaline.
So if everything gets acidic when it gets in the stomach, what is the benefit of an alkalizing diet? To understand this, we need to understand a little more about the stomach functioning of the acid-producing pump. Each time the stomach releases a molecule of hydrochloric acid (HCl) inside it, it needs to release a molecule of bicarbonate (which is alkaline) into the bloodstream to keep its (stomach) pH stable.
Each time the stomach releases a bicarbonate molecule into the bloodstream, the blood gets shot with an alkaline experience. Although the stomach remains acidic, the bloodstream becomes more alkaline, and both from the presence of bicarbonate and the high concentration of absorbed alkaline minerals present in alkaline diets generates the famous postprandial alkaline wave (post-feeding).
Therefore, the diet we consume ends up, causing our bodies to work more or less to keep the blood pH balanced. An acidic diet will leave acidic waste in your body, meaning it will acidify it, causing your kidneys to be overloaded to rebalance the levels. Alkaline dieting does the opposite, leaving alkaline residues in the body, making the body's natural defenses better prepared to prevent disease, especially those that develop in acidic environments.
Our diet must then be rich in foods with alkalizing power. Below is a table with a list of foods categorized from very acidic to very alkaline.
Primordial part of a diet is water consumption. While, depending on some factors, our body can handle up to one month without food, it cannot stay longer than three days without water. Our body consists of an average of 70% water, which can represent up to 110 Ibs of a person's total weight of 155 Ibs. It's too much! That is why there is a growing concern for people to seek quality water to hydrate.
So if we have concluded that the diet needs to have alkalizing power and water cannot be left out. Everything that has been said so far about pH, acidification, and alkalinization is applied to water. The ideal water for such a diet has unique characteristics, of which being alkaline is one of the most important. For water to be perfect for drinking, it needs to have a pH of at least 8.5 to bring all the benefits we've seen so far.
Alkalinity is just the first aspect it needs to fit into what is considered perfect. Far beyond being alkaline, it must have alkalizing power, that is, having a negative PRAL. However, what is PRAL specifically? PRAL is an acronym for Potential Renal Acid Load. Remer and Manz described PRAL in 1951. Both were able for the first time to calculate the acid or alkaline charge of food by comparing its consumption with urinary pH measurement. So they developed a mathematical calculation they called PRAL.
This article about PRAL was published in the Journal of American Diet Association, a reputable scientific journal. Several scientists published later studies on food and urinary pH, confirming and validating that the calculation of PRAL is exceptionally reliable for estimating the urinary pH and acid load of food.
Therefore, PRAL is widely used in the scientific world to determine if the diet is making the urine more acidic or alkaline.
