Atoms, Molecules, and Ions
To begin explaining the benefits of ionized water, we need to become familiar with these concepts. Let's get a brief explanation.
Atoms: They are one of the smallest parts of our body and all matter whether organic or not. Think of them like bricks in a house, they are the basis of the formation of everything we see, touch, feel, but even so, they are not the smallest matter. They are formed by a positively charged nucleus and are surrounded by a negatively charged electron cloud.
Electrons: Part of the formation of an atom, they are what constitutes the 'cloud' surrounding the nucleus, the so-called electrosphere, having a negative electric charge.
Protons: It's the opposite of the electron. It makes up the mass of the atom but has a positive charge.
Molecules: They are groups of united atoms. Just as several bonded bricks form a wall, so many atoms form a molecule. And these molecules together form the most diverse substances in existence.
Ions: Atoms are composed of, in addition to other particles, electrons. The loss or gain of an electron causes the atom to be electrically charged, so ions are nothing more than these atoms charged by this process.
Ionization
Now that you are familiar with the terms, we can better understand the concept of ionization and how excellent it is for health. In order to perform an ionization, a substance must come into contact with the water, causing a reaction, forming the ion.
As we saw earlier, the atom is by nature electrically neutral since it has the same amount of positive particles, protons, and negative particles, electrons. As the chemical reaction occurs, it may lose electrons or protons.
When the loss is of a negative charge (electrons) or when it is positively charged (protons), it becomes positively charged, which we call cation. Similarly, if it receives more electrons or loses protons, it has a negative charge, which we call anion.
Ionization, Alkalinization, and Water
Water, as it is known, is made up of H2O molecules, meaning, two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. As part of ionization, there is a breakdown of these molecules. They are separated into two types of ions, hydroxyls, represented by the radical OH-, which are alkaline and hydrogen ions, represented by the radical H+, which are acidic.
Chemical equilibrium occurs through the exchange of ions of a substance. Let us illustrate: Imagine that the water is in a glass and it is perfectly divided, while the OH- ions are at the top, the H+ ions are at the bottom. If a top ion goes down, the chemical equilibrium tends to send a bottom ion, up, so that they stay balanced. With the insertion of minerals that have more OH- ions, they start to unbalance the equilibrium, causing the water to have many more alkaline ions, thus alkalizing it.
Antioxidant Power
As we get older, our body starts producing more unstable molecules that are called free radicals. These radicals act on cells to make them look old. It is from this process that comes the term oxidation of cells. It is as if we rust over time. This scenario is propitious to the emergence of several degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, stroke, and even cancer.
Antioxidants are needed to fight this, meaning, agents that reduce the oxidation of the body. These agents are molecules with an electric charge as opposed to free radicals. They mix with the free radicals, making them harmless.
But how do we know if the water is antioxidant? Through the ORP. ORP stands for Oxidation-Reduction Potential, which tells us the antioxidant potential of the water. To be perfect, it needs to have a reduced ORP. And through the mineral ionization process, water has the added benefit of reducing ORP.
